Henriette Reason
I was born in Denmark, to Danish parents, but moved to Kenya with my family at the age of eight. It was a wonderful place to grow up and I have many lovely memories of safaris in the bush. Since then I have also lived in Dubai, Egypt, Scotland and England. I moved to New Zealand in 1994 and have called New Plymouth home ever since.I have always enjoyed anything creative and artistic and as a child I was always drawing, colouring and making things. Unfortunately I did not have the chance to do any serious art at school and when I see the wonderful things my daughter is learning in art at New Plymouth Girls High School it makes me rather envious that I did not have the same opportunities. It was in the year 2000 that I first took up painting when I was inspired by my eldest daughter who was at the time doing 7th Form art. I was very fortunate that somebody bought the first painting I put up for sale, which then gave me the encouragement to carry on. My preferred medium is oil paints on canvas and I love the thick texture and the vibrant colours. As to subject, I enjoy painting a large variety, from flowers and landscapes to animals and abstracts.
In 2007 I entered the Telecom White Pages Art Award and was lucky enough to win, getting my painting "Heard of Cows?" on the front page of the telephone book for a whole year. What an opportunity! I regularly exhibit at Real Tart Gallery, The Gables Gallery in Brooklands Park, New Plymouth and Eden Cafe in Bell Block, New Plymouth. I am also happy to do commissions.
