Katherine Novak
I arrived in New Plymouth in 1989 on a working holiday and fell in love with New Zealand. I am married to Craig . When I am not painting, I am running a household with 2, sometimes 3 children as well as managing our lifestyle block where we raise beefies and ride horses. I have always enjoyed any sort of crafts and embroidery –I attended all sorts of art courses from porcelain painting to salt dough sculpting whilst living in Norway several years ago. My most recent art education was at WITT in New Plymouth where I completed some of the papers towards the Batchelor of Fine Arts. I have been painting on and off for 20 years but nowadays I mainly paint using mixed media, with acrylic paint. My work is bold, loose but recognizable. I like it to be a colourful, visual feast. The paintings are generally large. I love to paint the human body – it is a wonderful series of shapes and lines that make it so interesting to reproduce and my medical background inspired me to explore the human male and female form either realistically or more abstractly. I particularly refer to the Neo Classical era for inspiration. The sharp divisions between the sexes is reflected in the neoclassical style itself. Neoclassical paintings are characterized by a severe linearity, rational compositions, direct lighting, and strong acidic colors. I view my work as a wonderful adventure of colour and joy. I paint for the enjoyment and cheer that it gives to people.
