Now that I’ve talked to someone who can put my creative life in ‘context’, I realise I’ve been working in creative ways with many different media for years! Before I married I had one job in the drafting department for a shoe factory - a job that came about because the boss saw some of my ‘doodles’!!.
When I married we started farming. It was a busy life but I found time to discover pottery – for about 15 years I made mostly domestic items.
After leaving the farm I was still very busy as we started another business, but I still found time for creative expression.
I’d finished with pottery as I couldn’t have an outside kiln once I was in town and an electric one just wouldn’t have done the job I wanted. Between work and family commitments I discovered and enjoyed patch work quilting, cake decorating, copper and enamel work, tatting and jewellery being a few. I’d painted off and on for years and found that in times of stress, apart from gardening, painting has been the most enjoyable and distracting pastime.
I’m self taught, and work in acrylics. Flowers seem to be the main subject I’m interested in at the moment .
When I was little and had gone ‘AWOL’ I was often found down the road in some ones’ garden amongst the flowers. I’ve made thousands of icing flowers, so obviously, when I look back, I can see that beauty, forms and variety found in this subject has an enduring interest for me. I love landscapes too, and can feel the urge to have a go at doing a few of them. It’s exciting to think of all the beautiful things I’ve yet to paint.
